Saori wedding dress chapter 3 and a few other things at Saori Santa Cruz

The last day of the Tour De Feece was on Sunday and I spun some Louet merino silk blue fiber and plied it with my Louet Karaoke fiber for a really lovely soft  colored skein. It was a "casually spun" skein.
Some many in my ravelry group" weaving in the saori" way did amazing yarns for TDF check out the ravelry groups spinning

I love my Louet S10 double treddle with the louet art yarn flyer and bulky bobbin

This is my 40 year old Clemes and Clemes  niddy noddy which I love . They still make them the same  only  better a  wee bit beefier now . (it has a removable  metal pin still)  so wonderful more about them here clems niddy noddy

The Saori wedding dress. chapter two….. and the weaving begins

Kori is progressing so nicely on her new Saori WX60 loom weaving her own wedding dress fabric. The natural cotton warp she wound and threaded is the perfect canvas for her hand spun plant dyed yarn wefts.  I am attaching her wonderful letter to me

Beamed on cotton warp at the studio ….
chaining her warp at Saori Santa Cruz

 learning to thread
She lives in a yurt in the Santa Cruz mountains. She is hand spinning and hand dyed most of her weft yarn and fiber using natural plant dyes and weaving  now from her home..

"Hi Jill!

I told you I would send these ( photos and updates) on Tuesdays, but I am going to make it Mondays as it is going so quickly!

I am having so much fun :) Pictures below, hard to get good ones as the lighting in our yurt is pretty poor. Trying to come up with a vision for the finished piece, but ultimately just having a good time watching what happens to colors in the white warp! I want the overall feeling to be light/white, but I also want to incorporate my plant dyed colors :) Love love love the most recent section where I loosely carded together and spun dark brown and white alpaca for a warm, wonderfully speckled gray.

Have woven 4 yards since we beamed on Thursday. I am loving the peace silk and camel/tussah blend--really fun to spin and also to combine with other fibers! May need to come back for more, we'll see how much longer it lasts... Back to work this week, but at this rate I may finish sooner than I thought.
Love,
Kori    "

"just getting started (thursday afternoon)"

"Light blue from my woad and indigo plants--having to choose colors carefully, much of my plant dyed yarn is very bright/saturated."

"Sunday evening 4 yards later--2/3rds of the warp to go... seems like it is going quickly."

"browns from camel/silk and naturally colored fleece.."

"Having trouble with the yurt lighting for the photos... colors are appearing duller than they actually are. Fabric is so soft! Really happy with it :)"

"Purples from redwood and dyer's puffball, blues from Japanese indigo and woad…"

"Greens from willow and hollyhock, grays from lightly carded and spun fleece--blacks, browns, and whites... Alpaca, Romeldale, BFL, and Rambouillet... Whites--many different fleeces and silk (both machine and hand spun)."

'You can tell your friend who is worried about the September heat that the fabric is soft, light, and airy-- thank goodness :) If the evening is cool, I will need a shrug. May be a little warm in the barn for dancing... but that would probably be true no matter what I wore :)

xoxo"

Thank you Kori for the lovely photos ,text and descriptions . Your wedding dress fabric is fabulous.

Anouncing a upcoming Saori Kai in Santa Cruz

One of the principles of Saori weaving is " Inspire one another and everyone in the group".Through daily/weekly/ monthly /yearly virtual sharing in my "weaving in the Saori way " group Ravelry saori way group here  many Saori weavers world wide converse, ask questions, post photos of their  weavings and share. In my Saori studio Saori Santa Cruz, students convene regularly several times a year for an informal sharing or class and we call that sharing a Kai.
Saturday August 9th I will be hosting a Saori kai at a local gallery. A fiber show will be featured for the month of August, with 12 local fiber artists ( see press release below). Everyone will be welcome to  attend the saori Ka. Please bring your current or past weavings to share. We will be discussing Saori and you are welcome to bring your saori looms and a chair to spend a few hours in the Michaelango Gallery class room located off the gallery, weaving. I will be showing a few techniques. It is not necessary to bring your looms, but you are welcome too, but please bring your woven pieces to share, a chair and a little someithing to share food wise.We can stay till 4 pm. Do not weave? Please come and bring a chair and some food to share and find out about  what Saori weaving is. (non weavers are welcome too.)
I will have a couple of looms in case any one wants to try weaving. You can bring your spinning fiber, drop spindles, and or wheel as well.  There is no charge .I will be discussing, and demonstrating some new techniques  among other things, hand spun yarns and  inserting additions  that we can use in the wefts  of  our Saori weaving.

 Michaelangelo Gallery Presents
Fiber inForms
First Friday August 1st, 6:00-8:30
August 1, twelve textile artists will present their work at Michaelangelo Gallery in Santa Cruz.
The twelve fiber artists find their creative voices through cotton quilting, indigo dying, Nuno felting, Saori and wire weaving and other forms that fibers and textiles take.  Pieces in the exhibit will be for sale.
The artists participating in Fiber inForms include:
Jody Alexander
Koko Baker
Tricia Goldberg
Vicki Johnson
Tobin Keller, Beth Mastrude
Ann Baldwin May
Garnett McFall
Nana Montgomery
Marilou Moschetti
Joan Near
Jill Nicolene Sanders.
In addition to the exhibit, which opens on First Friday August 1st with an open studio / artist reception open to the public, there will three artist demonstrations on Saturdays in August.
Beginning Saturday, August 2nd, Beth Mastrude will demo indigo dying during open hours of Michaelangelo Gallery, 12 - 4.  Visitors will have an opportunity to make a sample indigo dyed piece.  Indigo dye is an organic compound with a distinctive blue color.  Historically, indigo was a natural dye extracted from plants, and this process was important economically because blue dyes were once rare.

The following Saturday, August 9th, Jill Sanders will convene a Saori Kai, which will bring Saori weavers and others interested in weaving together to talk about their recent projects and exchange ideas and pieces.  Saori weaving was founded in Japan by Misao Jo about 40 years ago.  It is a form of weaving that encourages boldness and free expression.

The final demonstration on Saturday, August 16th, with Marilou Moschetti, a Nuno felting artist, will demonstrate the Nuno process and have people try the felting technique out for themselves.  Nuno is a Japanese word meaning "cloth."  The technique bonds loose fiber, usually wool, into a sheer fabric such as silk gauze, creating a lightweight felt.

The opening reception for Fiber inForms, August 1st, 2014 from 6 - 8:30. Please come meet the artists and enjoy an evening with us.
The show will be open to the public during the month of August.  The Gallery is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 to 4:00, and by appointment.
Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you!

Sincerely,
