Anouncing a upcoming Saori Kai in Santa Cruz

One of the principles of Saori weaving is " Inspire one another and everyone in the group".Through daily/weekly/ monthly /yearly virtual sharing in my "weaving in the Saori way " group Ravelry saori way group here  many Saori weavers world wide converse, ask questions, post photos of their  weavings and share. In my Saori studio Saori Santa Cruz, students convene regularly several times a year for an informal sharing or class and we call that sharing a Kai.
Saturday August 9th I will be hosting a Saori kai at a local gallery. A fiber show will be featured for the month of August, with 12 local fiber artists ( see press release below). Everyone will be welcome to  attend the saori Ka. Please bring your current or past weavings to share. We will be discussing Saori and you are welcome to bring your saori looms and a chair to spend a few hours in the Michaelango Gallery class room located off the gallery, weaving. I will be showing a few techniques. It is not necessary to bring your looms, but you are welcome too, but please bring your woven pieces to share, a chair and a little someithing to share food wise.We can stay till 4 pm. Do not weave? Please come and bring a chair and some food to share and find out about  what Saori weaving is. (non weavers are welcome too.)
I will have a couple of looms in case any one wants to try weaving. You can bring your spinning fiber, drop spindles, and or wheel as well.  There is no charge .I will be discussing, and demonstrating some new techniques  among other things, hand spun yarns and  inserting additions  that we can use in the wefts  of  our Saori weaving.

 Michaelangelo Gallery Presents
Fiber inForms
First Friday August 1st, 6:00-8:30
August 1, twelve textile artists will present their work at Michaelangelo Gallery in Santa Cruz.
The twelve fiber artists find their creative voices through cotton quilting, indigo dying, Nuno felting, Saori and wire weaving and other forms that fibers and textiles take.  Pieces in the exhibit will be for sale.
The artists participating in Fiber inForms include:
Jody Alexander
Koko Baker
Tricia Goldberg
Vicki Johnson
Tobin Keller, Beth Mastrude
Ann Baldwin May
Garnett McFall
Nana Montgomery
Marilou Moschetti
Joan Near
Jill Nicolene Sanders.
In addition to the exhibit, which opens on First Friday August 1st with an open studio / artist reception open to the public, there will three artist demonstrations on Saturdays in August.
Beginning Saturday, August 2nd, Beth Mastrude will demo indigo dying during open hours of Michaelangelo Gallery, 12 - 4.  Visitors will have an opportunity to make a sample indigo dyed piece.  Indigo dye is an organic compound with a distinctive blue color.  Historically, indigo was a natural dye extracted from plants, and this process was important economically because blue dyes were once rare.

The following Saturday, August 9th, Jill Sanders will convene a Saori Kai, which will bring Saori weavers and others interested in weaving together to talk about their recent projects and exchange ideas and pieces.  Saori weaving was founded in Japan by Misao Jo about 40 years ago.  It is a form of weaving that encourages boldness and free expression.

The final demonstration on Saturday, August 16th, with Marilou Moschetti, a Nuno felting artist, will demonstrate the Nuno process and have people try the felting technique out for themselves.  Nuno is a Japanese word meaning "cloth."  The technique bonds loose fiber, usually wool, into a sheer fabric such as silk gauze, creating a lightweight felt.

The opening reception for Fiber inForms, August 1st, 2014 from 6 - 8:30. Please come meet the artists and enjoy an evening with us.
The show will be open to the public during the month of August.  The Gallery is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 to 4:00, and by appointment.
Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you!

Sincerely,
